I just had a great read. Dad, Barbie & Me: An Insider Biography, released a couple of months ago, is the 'real' story of Jack Ryan, the brilliant, creative engineer who brought to market many of the toys we grew up with and loved, including the Barbie doll, Chatty Cathy, and Hot Wheels, written by Jack Ryan's daughter, Ann P. Ryan, virtually the first child to have interacted with and played with those iconic toys, and who lived in a real castle that my mind's eye tells me even had a moat.
Under all that, however, Ann Ryan communicates on many levels in a way that speaks to the inner child within us all who viscerally remembers hurting when a parent hurt and feeling sad and exasperated about not being able to change circumstances, that inner child that has had to adjust to rapidly changing environments in order to survive.
This story will be particularly poignant to those of us who grew up near Ann in Southern California within a geographical area stretching from Hollywood to the beach, during the intense changes and upheavals of the 1960s and 1970s, and to others who passed like ships in the night.

As a firsthand witness to the stories behind some of the most beloved toys of the twentieth century, she brings an intimacy and authority to this biography that no outside journalist could.
Now based in Chatham, Massachusetts, Ann has spent years researching, writing, and gathering the untold details that make Dad, Barbie & Me a work of lasting historical and personal significance.
